The Irish Gay Rights Movement was founded in Dublin in 1974 by David Norris, Seán Connolly, Clem Clancy, Edmund Lynch, Kenneth Jackson, and Martin Barnes. Its main aim was to campaign for the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland and to give gay activism in Ireland an organised public voice. Though predominantly male, the IGRM included lesbian women among its members, among them Joni Crone, Therese Blanche, and Phil Carson, while many other women organised separately through groups such as Liberation for Irish Lesbians, founded in 1978. In 1977, some members left the group, and figures including Norris, Edmund Lynch, Bernard Keogh, Tom McClean, and Brian Murray went on to help form the Campaign for Homosexual Law Reform. After that split, the IGRM continued for several years, but by 1984 it had ceased to exist.
